Forever Young

The Lucida Mansi Experience

Context:
The Experience

Forever Young - The Lucida Mansi Experience focuses on several locations within the historical city centre of Lucca. We focused on fostering the discovery of the city’s history and lesser known cultural assets. With our interactive path we aimed at picturing the atmosphere of the 17th Century, the period in which our protagonist Lucida Mansi lived, by transmitting a sense of creepiness and mystery around her vicissitudes.

Context: Institutions
& Goals

Forever Young involves two main institutions within Lucca: the National Museum of Palazzo Mansi and the Department of Culture, Events and Cultural Institutions of the City Council.

The institutional goal that guided us through the design of the experience is enriching and enhancing the cultural heritage in its custody, ensuring its accessibility and promoting its enjoyment.

Context:
Palazzo Mansi

Palazzo Mansi was the residence of the Mansi family from the end of the 16th to the 20th century. It was acquired by the Italian State in 1965 and opened in 1977 as a national museum. It aims at enriching and enhancing the cultural heritage in its custody, as well as to promote the enjoyment of its collections. Our visit focuses only on a part of its exhibits, the apartments of the Mansi family on the first floor. In the map below, the path indicated by the blue and red lines on the maps represents the route to be followed by visitors: it goes through Galleria nuova, Sala della Musica, Salotti di Parata, and finally the Alcova.

Context:
Other Locations

Within Lucca and under the jurisdiction of the City council are the other locations involved in Forever Young: mainly the Clock Tower (Torre delle Ore), but also squares like Piazza Giovan Domenico Mansi (next to the Church Santa Maria Corteorlandini), Piazza del Salvatore (Fontana della Pupporona) and Piazza San Michele.

Context:
Cultural Assets

We identified as further relevant cultural assets the Legend of Lucida Mansi, her mysterious supposed portraits throughout the years, and one of the most interesting institutions of Lucca, the Botanical Garden.

Concept:
Target Audience

We identified four possible users and population segments: families with adolescent children (aged 15+), young people, tourists from abroad and comics lovers.

We followed the Ideation Cards flow to better clarify our design and proceeded then with the creation of four personas, one for each target user. Click on the pictures to see the details related to each persona.

Concept:
Conceptual Map

After outlining the main points for development, all the relevant information was summarised in a conceptual map, including context of the experience, goals, involved institutions and locations, required technology and target audience.

Concept:
Museological Approach

We used as reference model the museological approaches taxonomy provided by Caraceni (2015), with its attention to the need of the institution, the type of interaction, the openness/closedness of the space, the content, the interaction between real and virtual and the possibility of visitor contribution. We also considered the mission and priorities of the cultural institutions involved.

This way, we identified and described Forever Young as part of “Category C”, i.e. Virtual museum enhancing museum exhibitions with open interaction in a closed space showing selected objects from the museum collection, not allowing visitor contributions.

Concept:
Cognitive Approach

Given the historical-cultural context and the very starting point of our project idea, i.e. the legend of Lucida, we accounted language-narrative as the foremost cognitive aspect to consider. However, we assumed issues concerning meaning-making, empathy and emotions, memory and recall, worthy of focus and attention, as well. In fact, these were all nuances that we wanted to let emerge from the interactive experience.

Goals & Requirements:
Goals

We listed our goals by dividing them into the following categories:

Cultural Goals

Unusual experience of the city through one of its most famous legends and most interesting characters.

Economic Goals

Competitive price ticket but sufficient to gain a profit (compensate expenses, purchase and maintenance, personal).

Cognitive Goals

Employ language & narrative to encourage a meaningful, exciting and memorable experience of the fascinating legend.

Logistic Goals

Direct tourists to less-visited areas of Lucca’s historic centre, yet relevant and interesting.

Goals & Requirements:
Devices & Technologies

  • AR visors & sensors in Palazzo Mansi’s interiors
  • Interactive mobile and web browser app
  • Free Wi-fi within Palazzo Mansi
  • QR Codes to unlock each step of the experience, especially the treasure hunt, and Totems to host them

Goals & Requirements:
Logistic & Agreements

  • Staggered entry times and limited number of visitors allowed within Palazzo Mansi
  • Online booking in advance strongly encouraged
  • Permissions from the City Council
  • Agreements with the Department of Culture, Events and Cultural Institutions of the City Council and with the Botanical Garden

Goals & Requirements:
Advertisement & Visitors requirements

  • Advertisement campaign on social media and posters displayed in main tourists attractions
  • Information about the experience provided on the website
  • Smartphone compatible with the apps
  • Reservations for a specific time slot booked on the website
  • Approximate foreseen time required for the visit: 25-30 mins (1st phase), 30-45 mins (2nd and 3rd phase), 30-45 mins (optional 4th phase)

Goals & Requirements:
Professionals

  • AR application designer & developer
  • Software developer and web/app designer
  • Graphic designer for identity and poster creation
  • Copywriter and Art director for advertisements
  • Social media manager
  • Staff/surveillance in Palazzo Mansi to monitor entrance and assist visitors

The Story
(Narrative Diagram)

We adapted the legend of Lucida to our scope and we outlined it by means of this narrative diagram:

Forever Young:
The App

Coherently with the division of the story, we segmented the experience in three steps as well: the 1st step being the AR visit in Palazzo Mansi, then the Treasure Hunt in the streets of the city, lastly the landing to the Clock Tower and the optional reward experience of the Botanic Garden.

Forever Young:
The App

In order to guide visitors during the whole Forever Young path, to let them check their progress and unlock the following sections, the idea of an interactive application was developed. The following image provides a wireframe overview of its sections.

Forever Young:
The App

Special attention was dedicated to outlining the 2nd phase, i.e. the Treasure Hunt’s details. Four hints were ideated, created as digital objects and included within the mobile app to be used throughout the path, thus meticulously indicating their locations and routes, directions and informative materials. Click on each clue to see more.

Interaction Diagram

Having a clear image of the project in its entire declination, we produced an interaction diagram to visualise the interaction flow and describe the ordered sequence of events in the Forever Young experience:

Team
Roles

Alessandra Failla and Ilaria Rossi are the authors of this project.

The design of Forever Young was conducted collaboratively, especially in outlining its context, concept and goals. The tasks to be done asynchronously were equally divided among the contributors.

Ilaria was responsible for text editing and for the development of the diagrams concerning the narrative story of Lucida and the interaction of users with the exhibition.

Alessandra focused on the graphic part of the work and developed most of the images included in the project, as well as she visited and photographed the locations within Lucca.
